Overview

Doodle was an app I created to serve as an organizable, multi-medium, digital replacement for a paper sketchbook. In order to solve this design problem, I decided to design for the use of haptic components in my plan to generate physical sensations. The next phase prototype will be to build and simulate those components.

Paper Feels Better, but doesn't last, and gets chaotic

A friend felt she had no way to organize and minimize her burdensome notes and sketchbooks, she wanted digital, but consistently preferred using analog sketchbooks.

Something about the feedback... the resistance of a pen on paper - helped users take in information better and forge stronger memory.

In order to solve this design problem, I decided to think about using haptic components in my ultimate design to generate physical sensations on a device.

Q.?

What the heck are haptics?  Check it out:

some of my crazy process

some of my crazy process

How do we mentally organize notes in analog compared to digital?

Investigating Mental Models

When you read a book, the story starts on the first page in the front and works to end on the last page in the back...

But when using a sketchbook or a journal, the oldest entry is on the first page and progresses forward in time to the back of the book with the most recent entry. Often, to review your sketch book, you'd want to start from the back.

Once we’re working in digital, our mental model changes. Do you flip the page, or view a space on a screen and grab a document?

Heres what I found out:

Users desired:

  1. Viewing by "most recent" first

  2. Ability to assign user-generated tags to categorize information

  3. Searching two ways: by topic (tag) and by time of creation.

After tests, experiments and interviews, I'm sketching

Purposefully experimenting with a combination of flat and skewmorphic design.

Providing textured-looking "paper style" was one solution to visually remind the user of the format she/he was in when the task bar was hidden.

It also created a better sense of what touch feedback to expect without pausing to think.

So...?

The technical engineering required to produce the medium for this application has yet to be widely produced This area of tech is progressing quickly, but we have yet to reach this fine a level.
